To Kirtipur and Back

This weekend, I met up with some friends and we headed out to a small hamlet to the southwest of the city. Well, small, hamlet, and southwest are not accurate.  It used to be a small hamlet to the southwest of KTM, but now it is a mid size town that is part of KTM. The uniqueness of Kitirpur is the old city feel, the fact that it is perch on a high hill, and has  historical significance .  When the first King come into valley most of the hamlets and villages were on the valley floor and quite easy to defeat. But Kirtipur's location up on a hill that rose up out of the valley floor, caused a bit of a problem for the soldiers to conquer. As the enemy forces were trying to climb up the steep sides, the people of Kirtipur mocked them and apparently blew raspberries at them.  When the place was finally defeated, the first thing theconquering king ordered was that all the men's noses and lips were cut off. There was only exception for not recieving this punishment - those who played wind instruments. I suddenly felt the need to learn the oboe!

So we headed
bowls and plates
off for an adventure.  We actually went to a small village south of Kirtipur, called Chobar, first just to say we had been there. The village has a temple next to the village square that has the distinction of have plates and other eating utensils nailed to  the walls of the temple. I approached a man to ask him about the reason for that, and he told us more about the practice - To make sure that their deceased relatives have eating utensils to eat on and with in heaven, the people nail plates and untensils to the temple walls.  This gentleman was dressed in white, so I asked him who in his family had died and he told us about his mother who had passed away two months before. He came to offer a  sacrifice each month and had brought his whole family with him. He said, "There are many interesting things about this temple, I wish my English was better so I could tell you about them."

Kirtipur
We walked around for about ten minutes and then decided to head over to Kirtipur.

Kirtipur, I think I mentioned was built on the top of a high hill. That was long ago and the city has slowly edged its way down the hillside on terraces. One of the two main universities in the country is at the base of the hill and so there are a lot of young folks milling around. Today most of them had cricket bats as there was a tournment at the school.
From the city gates, we decided to climb the stairs to the top of the town. We could have opted to walk around the base, but seeing that none of us had been to the top of the hill, we decided to hike up and see what we could see!
Not sure on the number of stairs, but we made it...

stairs
It was nice to get up where the breeze was. It was starting to heat up and so the breeze was appreciated.
We wandered around the top part of the town and talked to some of the locals. We watched a woman weaving for a while and took some photos of kids.
The view from the top was not good. We really need some rain in the whole valley because the air quality is so poor right now. Could not even see the hills that surround the valley, it was so hazy!

After a bit of time up there, we headed down leisurely, snapping photos (i'll put some in another post) and got back to our hired taxi to head home. It was a very pleasant excursion.

Playing with Lens

Occasionally I use a kaleidoscope and attach it to my camera lens and see what it can do.. Here are a couple of the better photos...

Story Telling

Story telling
looking for the countries in the story
The other day, the school had a guest speaker. She came into the year 3-6 classes and told the narrative of Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. I have to admit that I have not actually read this book. I have issues with the injustice of books in this genre, so I tend to stay away. But  Mrs. F told an intrigue rendition of this story with props and actions. I quite enjoyed it. But then I do enjoy some good story telling.

Wall Art

So the other day, I am walking down the street and I saw some new wall art on the zoo wall.  I don't usually stop and take a photo but this one was quite intriguing to me. There seems to be a lot of motifs going on.
The first thing that caught my eye was the bird coming to rest on the person's head.  It is very detailed and looks as though it has just landed. Why is it there? What does it represent? It stirred up a lot of questions. SO....just thought I would share it with you and see what you first saw....?

The TAIL of TWO AARDVARKS

One day a friend of mine came to visit and presented me with a gift of a purple crocheted aardvark. I loved him at first sight and called him Albert.

A couple weeks later, another friend came to visit and with her came her little boy. He had fun wrestling with Bertie during the visit. At the end of their visit, I felt God say that I needed to let them take Bertie home. So I offered Bertie to my friend's son and since he didn't have any stuffed animals, his mother eventually accepted, after much protest.  There was a bit of sadness on my part, watching Bertie go, but I knew that the young child would get a lot of enjoyment from playing with Bertie, so I was okay with letting him go.

Two days later, I visited my mailbox at school and there was a huge package in there. I rarely get mail, so I was quite excited and ripped open the envelope. As I unwrapped the gift, I started to laugh. Another friend had been visiting the USA and challenged a friend of hers, who owns a company called Kwirky Creations, to crochet an aardvark! She succeeded!  It was in the shape of my own signature too!!

His name is Antonio and he now sits in my office, waiting to be hugged.

God is so amazing!  I have incredible friends who know my love for aardvarks and look for ways to bless me through them. And then when I turn and bless others, God surprises me all the more!  What a true sign of His delight and love over me. It is just the reminder I needed today!

Viewing the team photos
A friend of mine had a scavnger birhtday party this weekend. The group met at the city gate and received their clues and headed out. After an hour and a half of searching the city and snapping photos, they all arrived  back safety at the birthday girl's home for a viewing of all the photos and a chili dinner.

This video was  a while ago... a long while ago...I have not seen the Himals for a very long time.

April is Whizzing By!

Splurge with a coffee and some
cribbage!
So it is the end of April. I have been on a two week Easter break.
At the beginning of the break, I flew down to Singapore for 10 days. It was a much needed break and I am thankful for encouraging friends, air con, cribbage, and meat. One of the highlights of my trip was returning to the school I worked at a number of years ago and teach the elementary chapels! I love talking about the Word of God!

Training teachers
After a break from the load shedding, water shortages, and stresses of work, I returned to KTM early to help with a teacher training day at one of the local schools. It was a good time and I had a great partner to work with.  While the trainings do drain me, I  enjoy them so much! I pray that the new teachers start the new school year well and a bit more prepared.

On Friday, I worked at school. I will be finishing the school year as the head of the elementary. So I wanted to get a semblance of order and agendas in line, so at least the first week runs smoothly. I will still be fulfilling the roles of Academic Director, US History Teacher, Sub, Admissions Test giver, and general Filler. So prayers are needed.

10 weeks to go!

Holi Festival

Bucket of Water
Today is the celebration of the Hindu Festival of Color. It's called Holi.  Its part of the celebration of the arrival of Spring. Gangs of festival participants wander around the streets with colorful tika powder and water balloons at the ready forattacking and splashing other passerbyers. Children, adults and even animals are fair game. The kids in my neighborhood are have a huge water fight right now with other neighbors. It has lasted for two hours so far and as wandering gangs come through the hood, they engage in a short, intense water fights and drive off the rivals.

Its been an exciting morning and I have had a good view of the road  and all  the action in the hood. However , as you have noticed, its  from the safety of my house I took pictures. I have no desire to have tika powder in my ears for the next couple weeks!
