On every door of the house and also around school hang whistles. I asked what they were for. Earthquakes. Apparently Kathmandu lies on a fault line, so when the ground starts shaking ( we also have an earthquake alarm, which sounds when the earth begins to move, giving one a bit of a warning), you are suppose to run to a door frame and grab the whistle. Then if you get trapped, you blow the whistle instead of yell. That way you don't lose your voice and risk not being rescued. I thought it was ingenious. And I am glad I asked!
